What is a bong?

A bong is a water pipe, mostly used for dry flower. You pack the bowl, and as you pull, smoke travels down into the water in the base, bubbles through it and rises up the tube to the mouthpiece. The water filters the smoke and takes some of the heat out, which is why a bong hits smoother than a dry pipe. You'll also hear them called weed bongs or water bongs. Bong or water pipe?

Bong and water pipe mean the same thing: a piece that pulls smoke through water before you inhale. Water pipe is the broader term and also covers hookahs and bubblers. A bubbler is a small water pipe you hold in one hand, while a bong is bigger, holds more water and sits on the table between pulls. Why glass bongs

Glass is the classic material for bongs. It doesn't hold onto old flavors the way silicone and acrylic can, you can see when it's time for a clean, and it rinses clean without scratching. Glycerin bong vs ice bong

An ice bong has notches in the neck that hold ice cubes above the water, so smoke passes over the ice on its way up. It works until the ice melts. Then the melted ice raises your water level, and you're adding more ice in the middle of a session. A glycerin bong moves the cold into a sealed coil of freezable glycerin on top of the bong. Freeze the coil for about an hour and there's nothing to melt, drip or refill. It stays cold for the entire sesh, and Freeze Pipe bongs are 75% smoother than a bong full of ice.

Types of bongs

Bongs come in a few classic shapes, and each one hits a little differently. Every one of ours carries a freezable glycerin coil on top.

How to choose the best bong for you

The best bong is the one that fits how you smoke. Here's what to look at:

• Glass. Look for thick borosilicate, which handles both bowl heat and freezer cold.
• Size. A bigger bong holds more water and more smoke, and a smaller one is easier to store and carry. Ours run from 11.5 inches for the Mini Bong to 19.5 inches for the Straight Tube Bong Pro.
• Percolator. More percs mean more filtration. The Straight Tube Bong Pro stacks three, the Swiss Perc Bong has two, and the Mini Bong pairs an inline perc with a honeycomb perc.
• Coil. The coil is where the cooling happens. The Spiral winds smoke along one long path, the Revolver splits it into straight tubes for open airflow, and the DNA runs it through two looping paths. XL coils hold 50% more glycerin.
• Bowl size. Most of our bongs take an 18mm bowl, a good size for sharing a session. The Beaker Bong and the Bong-Dab Rig Combo take a 14mm bowl.
• Stability. A wide base keeps a bong steady. Beaker bases flare out, the Straight Tube Bong sits on a 4.5-inch base, and the Layflat Bong rests on its side between pulls.
• Cleaning. Pieces that come apart are easier to clean. Every Freeze Pipe bong comes apart into the base, the coil and the bowl.

How much water goes in a bong?

Add water until the perc is covered. Then take a test pull with no bowl packed. You should hear a steady bubble, and no water should reach the coil or your mouth. If water splashes up or the pull feels heavy, pour a little out. If the perc isn't bubbling, add a little more. On a Freeze Pipe bong, only the coil goes in the freezer, never the base with water in it. Change the water after every session so each one tastes fresh.

How to clean a glass bong

Change the water and rinse each part after every session. When you see resin building up, take the bong apart and give it a deep clean: add 91% isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, cover the openings, shake, then rinse with room-temperature water. Let the coil dry for 20 to 30 minutes before it goes back in the freezer. The straight tubes in our Revolver Coils rinse right out, and the wide paths of the DNA Coil do too.
