TAG Bongs Review
Tag bongs, also know as Thick Ass Glass is renowned for their, well, thick ass glass. Yes it's true the best ability is availability but there's more than just glass thickness that goes into buying the best bong.
There are three main principles that make a great bong.; Price, quality, function. Tipping heavily in one direction causes a ripple effecting the other two. With that in mind let's compare TAG bongs to as similar piece we can made by Freeze Pipe.
As a disclaimer we would like it known that TAG bongs are awesome quality. They're expertly made and there's a reason they have been around as long as they have. Thick ass glass bongs are legit.
TAG's Big Bongs
The first picture is a popular TAG model, which is a beaker bong featuring a downstem in the base,16 tree arm middle percolator and sells for $420. The middle perc is impressive, our bubbler uses the same perc but on a smaller scale (6 arms vs 16). It's a good perc and will create a ton of filtration. The base, and this is a common drawback with TAG bongs, is a beaker base with a downstem. Beaker / downstems combo's are popular because people know them. It's typically what people think of when they picture a water pipe. Bu the truth is they don't do much in the way of filtration and will never have the filtration or air flow a stemless 90 degree joint posses.
Freeze Pipe's top end bong, the bong dual, sells for $250 ($70 less) and has a better base PLUS a massive freezable glycerin coil. The middle perc on the TAG probably creates more filtration than our Dual's UFO perc, but you're already getting so much filtration with the Dual's base and glycerin coil our goal with the middle perc was quality of life. Tree arm percs can be a pain to clean, especially when done as a middle perc on a large bong, while UFO's are one of the easiest to maintain.
Speaking of quality of life, it's pertinent to note that Freeze Pipe's pieces break down, whereas the TAG bongs are all one single piece. This may not seem like a big difference until it comes time to clean, store or travel with your piece. This becomes even more crucial with larger bongs like the 16" TAG bong above or the 22" Freeze Pipe Dual. Having the ability for each part to be separated will save immeasurable time cleaning and lessens the risks of accidents occurring,
The 16 tree arm TAG bong is a fine smoke. It's middle chamber is one of the best. But the $70 difference, better base and glycerin coil makes a compelling case for your hard earned dollars.
TAG's Cheaper Bongs
One of TAG's most popular pieces is the 18" straight tube which sells for $150. Design wise it's the classic beaker base / downstem combo which we talked about above, and an ice pinch. If you're unfamiliar with ice pinches they are the pre-historic glycerin chambers. Ice pinches are multiple indents of glass that form towards the center of the piece. They are made to hold ice cubes and prevent said cubes from entering the base of the piece. As smoke passes around the ice cubes some cooling does occur. What they don't tell you in two things. 1. This cooling pales in comparison to a frozen glycerin chamber, where much more of the smoke is cooled for a longer amount of time. And 2, as said ice cubes melt this water drips into the bong's base and ruins function.
This exact scenario was a huge catalyst in us starting Freeze Pipe.
Comparatively, on the Freeze Pipe side, we have our entry level Bong. The Freeze Pipe Bong sells for $160 and has a significantly better base and smoke cooling system. The base in our bong uses a stemless 90 degree joint and comes equipped with two percolators. An inline and sprinkler perc to be exact. Above that is our tried and true glycerin chamber that will our perform any amount of ice cubes you force onto an ice pinch.
